Google: Optimizing for AI Search Is Still SEO
Google published a guide for its generative AI features. John Mueller: SEO best practices remain foundational, no separate AEO strategy.
On May 15, 2026, Google published a new resource for optimizing for its generative AI features, and the takeaway is that there is no new playbook to learn. In a Google Search Central blog post bylined John Mueller, Google states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, so it is still SEO.
What was said
The guide is direct about where AI search sits relative to the work you already do.
Google says creating unique, compelling, and useful content influences your generative AI presence more than any other suggestion in the new optimization guide. It also stresses crawlability: generative AI features use publicly accessible, crawlable content to build grounded responses, so the content has to be reachable in the first place.
Context
The post lands in the middle of the AEO and GEO debate, the idea that AI search needs its own discipline with its own tactics. Google pushes back on that framing. Per the guide, special machine-readable files such as llms.txt are not needed, and neither are AI-specific rewrites of your pages. The signals that surface content in AI features are the same fundamentals that have always mattered for Search.
What it means for you
Nothing in your roadmap has to change. If you are tempted to buy an “AEO” service or maintain a parallel set of AI-only files, Google’s position is that the effort is better spent on quality and crawlability. Keep your content unique and useful, keep it crawlable, and cover the basics well: our on-page SEO basics guide walks through the elements worth auditing first, and the SERP snippet preview tool checks the titles and descriptions you write against Google’s pixel limits.

- Do I need a separate AEO or GEO strategy for AI search?

- What matters most for showing up in AI features?
- Creating unique, compelling, and useful content. Google states this influences your generative AI presence more than any other suggestion in the guide.
- Does traditional SEO still matter with AI search?
- Yes. Google calls SEO best practices relevant and foundational to success with its generative AI features. Crawlability and quality content still do the work.
