Google AI Mode Passes 1 Billion Monthly Users

Google AI Mode now has more than one billion monthly users. At I/O 2026 the company said the AI-powered search experience passed that mark about a year after its debut, with queries “more than doubling every quarter since launch.”

What Google announced

AI Mode is now the default for a huge share of Google’s audience, and the underlying model changed too. Google is making Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode for everyone globally, and it is expanding Personal Intelligence in AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages at no extra cost.

Google also previewed “information agents” that scan the web in the background and send a synthesized update, launching first for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer. You can read the full recap on the Google blog.

What it means for you

Scale like this confirms the direction rather than changing the playbook. More searches now resolve inside an AI answer, so a top-ranking link matters less than being one of the sources that answer pulls from and cites. That is won the same way ranking always was: crawlable pages, clear structure, and content that is genuinely more useful than the commodity version. Google has been explicit that this is still SEO, not a separate GEO or AEO discipline.

[ FAQ ]
How many people use Google AI Mode?
Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users, about a year after launch, and that queries have more than doubled every quarter since it shipped.
Do I need a separate GEO or AEO strategy because of this?
No. Google's position is that optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO. The same fundamentals, crawlable pages and genuinely useful content, are what get you cited in AI answers.
What does AI Mode reaching this scale mean for my traffic?
More queries are answered on the results page, so fewer end in a click. The way to stay visible is to be the page the AI answer draws from and links to, which rewards clear, accurate, well-structured content.
