Google Tests AI Topic Overviews Inside Discover

A new Discover test called Dive deeper shows an AI-generated topic overview with links to related stories instead of sending the tap straight to a publisher.

Google Tests AI Topic Overviews Inside Discover

Google is testing a Discover feature called Dive deeper that answers a tap with an AI-generated topic overview instead of a publisher’s article. Google’s Robby Stein announced the test on September 18, 2026, and Search Engine Roundtable has the details.

What it does

Tapping “Dive deeper” on a Discover card opens what Stein describes as a short topic overview with prominent links to related stories, community reactions and original reporting. The overview is explicitly labelled as AI-generated, with the usual note that it can make mistakes.

The test is starting on videos, and Google says it will experiment with several design variations in the coming weeks.

Why publishers are watching

Barry Schwartz’s concern in the Roundtable write-up is the one every publisher will have: if the overview gives the reader the full context, fewer readers have a reason to tap through to the article underneath. Discover has been a large and volatile traffic source for news and lifestyle sites, and a summarization layer sitting between the card and the click is the same pattern that reshaped click-through rates on the results page.

That pattern is measurable, not speculative. Ahrefs found AI Overviews cut the top organic result’s click-through rate by 58%, which we covered in the Ahrefs AI Overviews CTR study. Discover traffic behaves differently from search traffic, so do not assume the same number, but do assume the same direction.

It also fits a run of Discover-adjacent moves. Google has been adding generated content to the overview surface itself, most visibly when it put AI image generation inside AI Overviews, and the audience for that surface is no longer small: AI Mode passed a billion monthly users in June. Discover was the last big Google surface still handing the tap straight to a publisher.

What it means for you

Three things are worth doing now rather than after a rollout.

Separate your Discover traffic from your search traffic in reporting, so you can see a Discover-specific change when it happens instead of watching one blended line. Search Console splits Discover into its own report and most site owners never open it.

Second, look at which of your pages survive being summarized. An overview can restate a fact. It cannot replace original reporting, primary data, a tested opinion or a tool. Pages whose whole value is a competent restatement of public information are the ones an overview absorbs first.

Third, keep the fundamentals boring and correct, since the card itself is still driven by your title, image and description. The title tag and meta description length guides cover the two fields Discover leans on hardest, and the SERP snippet preview tool will show you where each one gets cut.
